The 6th Annual Rags $2 Riches Fashion Show Gala, an event highlight on the Detroit Fashion calendar, was held Sunday, February 25 at the Jam Handy located in New Center, Detroit, a gothic-revival performing arts space and art gallery repurposed from a historically significant film studio and relic of Detroit’s film industry. The 6th annual sustainable fashion showcase opened with a gallery-style, fine art presentation from two local artists and closed with a lively post show gala featuring a performance from a local R&B duo.
This year, show producer and fashion creative Stephanie ‘The Bag Ladie’ Bedell curated the various looks with the evening’s theme; ‘Evening Wear With a Twist’ threaded throughout, accessorized by William Palmer Homme and Jaiden Brand. Each thrifted and up-cycled garment was sourced from one of the largest thrift stores in the Southeast, and long-time event sponsor, The Salvation Army.

The Detroit Fashion Community sat in the front row of the show’s circular seating arrangement that drew our attention to the circular platform in the center giving the audience an intimate look at each design as the models pumped by.
During the second segment of the show the audience was also introduced to LaCasa NeAngels, the fashion design debut of Rockie-B, one of Detroit’s top fashion models and beloved art enthusiast. The new couture fashion house specializes in design that incorporates elements of thrifted garments. The capsule collection featured bold colors and patterns, and fluid moving fabrics flowing down the runway. The sensual and modern vibe of the collection was highlighted through the exquisite styling of the formal head pieces, opera-length gloves, and the William Palmer Homme accessories. The show was a pleasant introduction to the LaCasa NeAngels brand and a triumphant moment for the emerging designer.
